French income tax calculator: how much would I pay?

The same income is taxed very differently depending on the household, so the calculator shows five of them side by side rather than asking about yours.

The family quotient

French income tax divides the household’s taxable income by a number of shares — one for a single person, two for a couple, a half more for each of the first two children — applies the scale to one share and multiplies back. The advantage children bring is capped per half-share, and a low-income discount, the décote, then reduces small amounts of tax.

On a taxable income of €40,000 earned in 2025, for example, the tax is €5,104 for a single person, €1,787 for a single parent with one child, €1,201 for a couple, €275 for a couple with one child and nothing for a couple with two.

Which year is which

French tax is paid a year after the income is earned: income earned in 2025 is taxed in 2026. The calculator labels each year both ways — “Tax 2026 (income 2025)” — so the two are never confused.

Checked against the State’s own engine

France publishes its tax rules as an open engine, OpenFisca, with a public interface. The calculator is written from article 197 of the tax code and compared every week with that engine, at twelve incomes for every household and both years, to the euro.

This is the income tax on taxable income, not net pay. CSG and CRDS, social contributions, the 10% allowance, tax reductions and credits (childcare, donations, home help), the withholding rate and the high-income contribution are not in it, and nor is any cross-border treaty.

Try it

Everything you type here stays in this browser. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is saved, and no account is needed. It is also on the calculators page, beside the others.

An estimate from the published rules, not a tax assessment, not advice and not binding. Your own return, your payslip or the tax administration decide what you actually owe.
